ACCOMPLISHMENTS

From our 2003 Annual Report:

In 2002 new staff and some new Board members invigorated the Council. Existing program areas were expanded and new activities were established. CRG’s key accomplishments in 2002 were the following:

(1) The bimonthly magazine GeneWatch (GW) underwent major redesign and expanded distribution to newsstands and bookstores nationwide through two distributors (Ubiquity and OneSource). These efforts increased circulation by thirty percent.

(2) CRG continued to raise awareness on the role of environmental toxins and non-genetic factors in disease (for e.g. autism) and health through articles in GW and educational materials.

(3) The Council contributed to protecting the environment and food security through the Safe Seed project in which over 10% of seed vendors signed a pledge to only trade seeds free from genetic engineering.

(4) CRG developed and maintained the national database of state laws on genetic privacy and discrimination with assistance from the Boston Law firm Foley Hoag. This project is now being expanded to include a new database on legal cases that involve genetic information.

(5) A new working group has begun efforts to research and increase public information/awareness on biological warfare. CRG also partners with a coalition of national organizations that will apply pressure on the US Administration to comply with the Biological Weapons Convention.

(6) CRG Board and staff members gave speeches and press interviews and worked with policymakers and the courts on a range of matters related to the implications of new genetic technologies. For example, Paul Billings, CRG Chair, was invited to provide inputs to the US Senate on the pending bill on genetic discrimination; CRG submitted comments on human developmental modifications to the President’s Council on Bioethics; the Executive Director gave talks on the adverse impacts of GM foods; and Stuart Newman, a CRG Board member, testified on human cloning to the US Senate.

(7) The Genetic Bill of Rights developed by CRG is being published as a book with one chapter for each right. Editing of individual chapters is now in progress.

In 2003 CRG will expand its activities in the above program areas as they continue to be critical debates within biotechnology.
